About Tropea
A seaside town that feels like it was plucked straight from a movie, Tropea is textbook southern Italy. Perched high on a cliff along the Calabrian coast, this laidback town boasts crystal-clear waters, sun-bleached buildings and an old town that oozes charm at every corner. It’s the kind of place where you’ll spend your days hopping between golden beaches and trattorias, with a scoop of tartufo gelato in hand – this is a local favourite. History lovers will find plenty, too, from ancient churches to legends of Norman knights. And, let’s not forget the food – spicy ’nduja, fresh seafood, and sweet Tropea red onions make every meal tasty and memorable. It’s a slice of La Dolce Vita that somehow still flies under the radar. 1. Soak up the views from Santa Maria dell’Isola This iconic monastery sits on top of a rocky outcrop right off the beach. And yes, the views are every bit as eye-catching as they sound. Climb the steps for sweeping panoramas of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding coastline. Sunset here? Pure bliss. 2. Wander the narrow lanes of the Old Town Tropea’s historic centre is a maze of cobbled streets, ivy-covered balconies, and centuries-old palazzi. You’ll find artisan shops, local wine bars, and plenty of places to grab an espresso and just watch the world go by. It’s romantic, rustic and photogenic. 3. Hit the beaches below the cliffs Tropea’s beaches are the real deal – soft sand, turquoise water, and those iconic cliffs towering behind you. Head to Spiaggia della Rotonda or Spiaggia ‘A Linguata for a swim, some sun and a view that’s hard to beat. Beach days don’t get better than this.
